A New Era

"SHUT UP MOM! I'M COMING!" I yelled back down the stairs. I heard start yelling at my little brother. After gathering a few more things before we left for the University of Nebraska, I turned to leave my room for the last time. Well, for the last time that it would truly be my room. I new once I stepped out it would become just a place I slept when I came home on school breaks. I took a deep breath and was about to turn out the light when I saw a photo on my desk. How could I have forgotten to pack that? I picked it up intending to put it in my bag, but stopped and looked at it first. I studied everyone in the picture and smiled. It was a photo of all my friends and me. We had taken the weekend before during my going away party. I closed my eyes and remembered the stale smell of beer at Vanders house, and all of my friends gathered in the backyard talking and goofing off. Then I remembered sitting next to Camron in his bedroom. We were alone sitting on his bed, everyone else had left or crashed by then. We had just finished laughing at one of his dumb jokes, when the tone suddenly turned serious, and he took my hand.
"What are you proposing now?" I asked, and he smiled.
"No. I'm just going to miss you. You know out of all our friends we are the closes." He said.
"I know." I answered.
"And you are the only one of us to go off to school. You're leaving behind all us punks." He said, and I giggled.
"Oh stop. I'll be back to visit." I told him.
"I know. But it will be different." He said.
"It will be. But it won't be bad, I promise." I told him. We talked for hours, before daylight broke.
"Oh my god! The sun is coming out!" I giggled.
"Oh shit! Is it?" He asked, and peeked outside.
"I told my mom I'd be home at 2:00." I laughed.
"Come on, I'll drive you home." He said, and stood up. I jumped up off his bed, and headed for his door, but he grabbed my arm and stopped me.
"What?" I asked.
"There is something I just have to do before you leave." He said.
"What, wrestle one more time?" I asked. He smiled, and shook his head.
"What then?" I asked, and he leaned down and kissed me. I was surprised, but excited at the same time. I shut my eyes and tried to hold on to that moment as long as possible. His lower lip was pierced and I thought it felt really neat. I had just started imagining him kissing my neck, then moving lower when he stopped. I opened my eyes and looked up at him.
"I'll miss you kid." He said.
"I'll miss you too Cameron." I told him.
"CHEYENNE!" My mom yelled, snapping me out of my memory. For the first time I started to cry looking down at my picture. It really was the end of an Era, like Vander had said durning one of our many shot toasts. I wiped my eyes, and ran down stairs.

Sarah said...

"You don't want to be late, sweetie." She said smiling as she put her arm around me.
"I know." I said, a little frustrated.
"Well, this is it. How do you feel?" She asked.
I just shrugged and tried not to cry. We filled the back seat of the car with my boxes, then hit the road.

We only made one stop to walk and get something to eat and we were pulling up at the University an hour later. Mom parked her car.
"Mom, it's huge." I said. I looked out the window as hundreds of students walked in and out of the building. A couple were studying near a big fountain in the greenest grass I had ever seen before.
"Well, come on. Let's check it out." Mom said excited. She opened her door. "Let's find your room before we start moving your things in."
She shut the car door and I got out. We were searching for room 120.

We had a small map of the campus, but it wasn't much help. My mom stopped a girl that was walking by.
"Excuse me. Can you point us in the right direction of dorm 120A? She asked.
"Freshman." She said, looking at me.
"Yeah, you guessed it. Aren't you smart?" I asked, and my mom glared at me. The girl just walked away.
"What was that about?" My mom asked.
"I'm just grumpy." I told her, and she laughed.
"Don't laugh at me!" I said, and she laughed harder. We walked around a little while longer when my mom finaly stopped.
"I think this is building A." She said.
"It must be in here." I told her. I opened the door and we walked in.
"Oh my gosh." I said, looking around. There were so many people walking in and out of the dorm rooms. Family's all dropping off their girls.
"This is more people then my entire highschool." I said.
"Yeah, no kidding." My mom ansered looking around.
"Come on. You must be on the second floor." She said, and we walked up some stairs.
"Here you go! Room 120!" My mom said excitedly. There was a small piece of paper on the door with my name on it.
"And it looks like your roomate is Claudia B. Michaelman." My mom said, reading the name under mine. I opened the door and the room was empty.
"Looks like I made it first." I said.
"Come on, lets get your stuff. We have to unload and make it to Auditorium B for the Open House." She said, hurrying off.
"MOM! WAIT!" I shouted, running after her. "I don't want to go to the Open House.
"It is the only kind of orientation you'll get, sweetie. Don't you want to know how stuff works and where things are?" She asked.
"I'd figure it out." I told her.
"Chey, you are going!" She said, and I gave in.
"Fine." I told her, and she laughed. We rushed out to the car and grabbed some boxes. It took us two trips to unload everything. When we made it back up the second time, Claudia was in the room.
"Hi, you must be..." She paused, trying to remember my name on the door. "Cheyenne?"

Sarah said...

"Yeah." I said.
"Well, would you like me to help you get settled or you think you're good?" Mom asked.
"I'm good."
"Okay." She said. I could tell she was trying hard not to cry.
"Love you." I said. She gave me a hug and walked out of the room. She blew me a kiss as she turned down the hall.
"Are you close to your Mom?" Claudia asked. She opened a suitcase and started pulling clothes out of it.
"Eh." I shrugged. "Not THAT close."
"My Mom sucks." She said. "We don't get along at all."
"Oh really?" I said. I had no idea what to say to that.
"Yup." She said.
We talked a little while we unpacked all of our things and got situated the best we could.
"Are you going to the orientation thing?" I asked her.
She laughed. "Nah. Classes don't start till Monday, so I figured I would check things out the next few days myself." She explained.
"Oh." I said. "Do you mind if I go along?" I wasn't really sure if she was someone I wanted to hang out with. It didn't seem like we would have a single thing in common, but I did want to make new friends. Maybe different ones too.
"Sure." She said. "We'll compare our schedules and cover all the bases."
"Cool." I said.
"I'm sort of a closet science geek." She laughed. "And a bookworm. I'm good at hiding it."
She was very good at hiding it. I pictured her as one of those snobby cheerleader types.
"So, you like do all your homework and shit?" I asked.
"Uh huh. . ." She said nodding. "I'm always the top in my class. If you need tutoring, let me know."
"Wow."
She just laughed. "Don't act so surprised."
I smiled. "I may just need your help with Math."
She shrugged. "Like I said, just let me know."
She finished hanging up a few dresses and we went walking around campus. We wanted to get familiar with our building first. "Let's find the showers and stuff first." She said. She had a map in her hand and she looked confused. "Okay, I think it's this way." She said pointing.

Unknowingly we crossed into the guys dorms. Since there were so many families and extra people, we hadn't even realized it. Of course if we were paying attention to the signs, we would have noticed.
"Oh, here are the bathrooms!" Claudia said, and we walked in. In to a bathroom full of guys!
"OH MY GOD!" She said, and ran out. I froze and looked around. There was just a few guys in their towels looking at me confused.
"Hi." I said, and started giggling. Claudia walked in with her hand over her eyes, and pulled me out.
"What are you doing?" She asked, laughing.
"I FROZE!" I said, and we both ran back to the girls dorms.
"HERE is the girls bathroom!" She said.
"I guess we passed it." I said, laughing harder.
"Wow. That embarassing." She said.
"Want to find the cafeteria and the library?" She asked.
"Yeah!" I said. I was having fun with her.

Sarah said...

We walked around for about an hour, then we decided to stop in the cafeteria to get something to eat. We each got a salad and a water.
"Your healthy eating just may rub off on me." I told her.
She laughed, "Yeah. This is how I grew up eating."
"Lucky you." I said.
She shrugged. "It's probably a good thing."
"It is." I said.
"Do you want to get your books today? I think the bookstore is open. I was also thinking of applying either there or in the cafe." She said.
"Sounds good." I said smiling.

By 6:00 that night we were both thoroughly exhausted! We had just made it up to our room and sat down when there was a knock at the door.
"Aw man." Claudia groaned.
"I'll get it." I giggled. I got up and answered the door. There was a young guy there looking really nervous.
"Uh, can I help you?" I asked him.
"Sam. Is Claudia here?" He asked, looking around.
"Uh, yeah. Claudia!" I shouted. She walked to the door.
"OH MY GOD! SAM!" She yelled and pulled him inside.
"What are you doing here?" She asked him.
"I had to see you." He said.
"We broke up, remember." She asked.
"That was because we didn't think a long distance relationship would work." He said.
"It wont." She told him.
"I'm going to school here." He said, and she screamed.
"NO WAY!" She shouted, and jumped in his arms.
"Um....I'm just going to go for a little bit." I said, and snuck out.

I walked along the beautiful fountain as the sun started to set. The weather was perfect with the light breeze. I pulled both sides of my cardigan together and crossed my arms. I felt so free for once in my life. I saw a guy jogging in my direction. He stopped at the fountain and sat down on a bench. He looked up at me as he tried to catch his breath. He smiled and took a sip of his water. He nodded. "What's up?" He asked.
I shrugged. "Just getting some fresh air." I said as I walked over to him. "I'm Cheyenne."
"I'm Romeo." He said.
"Seriously?" I giggled.
"Yeah." He said. He smiled.
"Cool name." I said.
"Yet not AT ALL original." He laughed.
"Well, it's definatly not common." I said.
"True." He said.
"What's your full name?" I asked.
"I like JUST met you." He said.
"Okay. . ." I said.
He laughed, "I'm kidding."
"Oh. . ." I said, feeling silly.
"Romeo Demetrius Alexander." He said.
"Wow."
"Yeah." He said. "My Mother is obsessed with Shakespeare."
I laughed and sat down next to him.
"You a Freshman?" He asked.
"Is it like written on my forehead?" I asked.
He just laughed.
"Are you?" I asked.
"Nah." He said. "Junior actually. I'll be here forever."
"What are you going to school for?" I asked.
"Psychology." He said.
"Oh wow. Cool." I said.
"Yup." He sighed. "I think it's time for you to share your full name."
I laughed.
"Come on. I'll wait all night if I have to." He said smiling.
"Cheyenne Marie Muholland." I said.
"Irish." He said.
"Yup." I giggled.
"I am one hundred percent Scottish." He said.
"Wow. Seriously?" I asked.
"Yup."
"Interesting." I said.
"My parents moved here right after I saw born actually." He said.
"So, they have accents?" I asked.
"Oh yeah big time." He said.
"That's awesome!" I laughed. "Too bad you don't have one. They're pretty hot."
"I could have one." He laughed.
"Okay." I said.
"Check this out." He said and started reciting a poem with a very thick accent. "O, my Luve's like a red, red rose,
That's newly sprung in June.
O, my Luve's like a melodie
That's sweetly play'd in tune.
As fair as thou, my bonnie lass,
So deep in luve am I;
And I will love thee still, my dear, Till a' the seas gang dry.
Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt wi' the sun:
I will love thess till, my dear,
While the sands o' life shall run:
And fare thee well, my only luve!
And fare thee weel, a while!
And I will come again, my luve,
Tho' it ware ten thousand mile."
"Interresting. . ." I said starting to laugh.
"You asked for it. I've got more where that comes from." He laughed.
"Let's here some more." I said.
"How about tomorrow at seven?" He said. "Or you can follow me to my apartment right now. I'll shower real quick, then we can share some ice cream."
"Um. . ." I said thinking. "Okay, but I can't hang out too long."
"Okay." He said. He stood up. "I'll walk you back here too. I wouldn't want anyone to steal you or somethin."
"Sounds like a plan." I said.

Christina said...

"So, no boyfriend?" He asked.
"No boyfriend." I said, and giggled.
"Didn't leave any lucky guy back home?" He asked. Just a friend. I didn't date much." I told him.
"Shy?" He asked.
"Just not the right opportunities." I told him. He smiled at me and looked so amazing. He was a lot smarter looking then most of the guys I hung out with back home. He was deffinatly more charming too. Most of my guy friends would have already greabbed my ass by then. Accept for Cameron, but that was different.
"So, no girlfriend?" I asked.
"Nope. I wouldn't mind one though." He said and winked. I laughed! It wasn't long before we made it to his apartment.
He took my hand and ran me up to his place! I was already so tired from running around with Claudia all day! We made it up to his room, and he had the whole apartment all to himself. I was jealous!
"Just wait here. I'll be right out." He said, and pointed to his couch. I sat down and waited. Sure enough he was out in just a minute. Showered, dressed and ready to go!
"Wow. That was fast!" I told him. He just shrugged.
"Come on!" He said.
"Are we running again?" I asked.
"Yeah. You should start." He said.
"Are you calling me fat Romeo?" I asked. He laughed.
"Not at all! You look great." He said, and imediatly started blushing.
"I mean, I really like to run, and maybe if you like having ice cream with me tonight, you would like running with me sometimes." He said.
"Hmmm...Lets see how good this ice cream is first. Okay Romeo?" I asked.
"Okay, but stop saying my name all the time." He said, and I laughed.

Sarah said...

He scooped us each a bowl of ice cream.
"So, running and Ice Cream. . ." I said. "Doesn't really fit together."
He laughed. "Ice Cream is one thing I could never cut out of my diet." He said.
"Ah."
"What about you?" He asked.
"I could definatly cut out ice cream." I said. "But, popcorn is another story. . ."
"Popcorn over ice cream? What are you? Some kind of weird. . . ice cream hater lady? That is just preposterous." He said.
I laughed.
"I should be a comedian." He said.
"You should." I said.
"I know." He said. "I'm pretty talented."
I laughed.
"Why don't you tell me some of your talents." He said.
"Only some people get the privledge to experience my talents." I said.
"Experience?" He asked.
"Yeah."
"Uh oh. . ." He laughed.
"That's right. Are you Fred Flinstone?" I asked him. "Cause I could make your bed rock."
We both laughed.
"You're not shy at all." He said.
I shrugged. "You're just easy to talk to."
He smiled.

Sarah said...

"I met a guy." I said sitting down on my bed.
"I was wondering where you went!" She laughed.
"He's pretty cute." I said. "I'm going running with him in the morning."
"Oh make sure you stretch a little first so you don't embarass yourself." She said.
"I will." I said.

We went to the bathrooms to take showers and get ready for bed. When we were done, we went back to our room and layed down while we watched Adult Swim.

The next morning my alarm went off at 5:30 and I shut it off quickly so I wouldn't wake up Claudia. I put on some workout clothes and my tennis shoes, then stretched on the floor. I had excersized since my wieght training class last semester of highschool. I was hoping I wouldn't be too out of shape. It felt goot to stretch, and pop my back. I looked at the clock and it was almost 6:00. I put some deoderant on, pulled my hair back, then ran down to meet Romeo. I couldn't help but laugh when I thought of his name.
"What is so funny?" He asked when I came out of the building door.
"Nothing." I lied.
"Ready?" He asked, smiling. He had a sly look on his face like he didn't think I could keep up.
"You know it." I said, and started running.
"Hey! Wait!" He shouted.
"What?" I shouted back. He ran and caught up to me.
"I run the other way." He said, laughing.
"I want to run this way." I said.
"Fine, but this way is harder." He said, and ran a little ahead of me.
